I asked the IT to make changes to the departmental web page. The IT guy wrote back at 1:00 AM to tell me that he had completed the task. I had lodged my request during normal business hours. Yet I feel profoundly guilty that this poor dude had to work on my stupid task in the middle of the night on Friday. But then again, IT people might actually derive pleasure from working at night. Right? Or should I go on feeling guilty? Please help me decide.
Don’t feel guilty. It was his choice to work at night. For all we know he could be working from some tropical island where it was 9 am when he sent you this email.

Unless you gave a specific deadline or were bossy about how urgent it was you shouldn’t feel guilty. IT guys famously do things on their own time schedule which doesn’t necessarily correspond with normie work hours.

I would never. I love our IT people. Actually everybody in the support staff has always been great.

So you can assume he’s was working on his own schedule. Thank him sincerely and no need to feel guilty.

I’ve worked IT for over 20 years at this point and am quite positive your IT does his best work around 1 AM, like me. Just say thank you sincerely, that’s more than they usually get, haha.

my husband has worked in IT or some related field almost all of his life. Left to his own accord, he would 100% be working on something at this hour rather than normal business hours.

Yes, in some cases/positions, there were no normal business hours when it was necessary to complete a report or proposal.
