You know what else is enormously better in Florida?

The CVS.

[For our Canadian readers, it’s the American Pharmaprix.]

Our CVS back home is a dump. I go there because it houses my pharmacy, but I never buy anything there aside from when I experience moments of pure desperation. The store is ugly, and none of the products are interesting.

But the CVS we frequent in Florida is a gem of a store. Everything I buy there is of excellent quality. There are tons of unexpected brands at inexplicably friendly prices. It’s like a store for fancy people on a budget. I found a product that I couldn’t afford at home at $128 for $20. I thought I had spent too much time in the sun and was hallucinating.

Would you consider living in Florida?

  I’d consider living in any area of this country where there would be a job with at least some small emphasis on research. I’m professionally lonely. I would like to be around people who read, who want to talk about books, who have some sort of a scholarly life.

    Have you looked into any Florida university that would meet your requirements? Or any other state? Does political landscape of a state have any influence on your choice of a place to live?

      The way it works in academia is that for a university to start looking for a professor at my rank, which is the highest possible rank, somebody needs to retire or die. The department should be interested in looking not for a young colleague to mold and shape, but for somebody who is already all shaped and known in the field. This happens very rarely.
      
      Of course, I would prefer a deep red state, but these preferences have no impact on anything. There are maybe three jobs in a year at my rank and in my field in the entire country. Out of them, one might be research-oriented. With such extremely limited options, I don’t get a chance to consider any factors at all.

Thank you for such detailed answer. I’m outside of academia and the field of education in general, so I wasn’t aware of the specifics. Wouldn’t it great to find a place of work that fits you in a great state? Sounds like a unicorn. 🙂
