Chirbes gave his complete attention to the books he read regardless of their genre. He respected and loved entertainment literature and took it just as seriously as he did literary classics or works of history or philosophy. He despised poorly written books and was very direct in his criticism. But their genre was not a factor for him.

The writer was completely secure in his literary taste and did not need to evince genre snobbishness. I’m now even more certain that people who like to snob all over some of my reading choices are wrong. I gleaned some excellent recommendations of genre literature from Chirbes’s diaries, and I’m now happily exploring them.
