We invite Fulbrighters each year at my department. The university forces them to stay in the dorms. Last year, one of my Fulbrighters was forced to share a dorm suite with two roommates from low-civilization countries. She’d never seen such behavior as theirs before and was horrified.
My Fulbrighter is a person from a high-civilization country, so she decided to solve the problem by civilized means. To avoid living with feral roommates, she decided to pay for her own housing off campus. But the university didn’t allow this. It was explained to us that people are placed in housing with roommates from very different cultures on purpose. The phrase “cultural enrichment” was unironically used. Upon hearing this expression, I started giggling, but the administrator I talked to was stony-faced.
