Q&A about Crash

OK, this is going to be a first:

I never get a chance to say this, so thank you for the opportunity, but no, I haven’t read the novel. I’ve seen the movie, though.

To be honest, I had no idea there was a novel. The David Cronenberg movie is a masterpiece. It’s one of my favorite movies. Strangely, I never investigated where it came from, and it’s a bit of a shock to discover after all this time that there is a novel behind the film. 

Hah! There’s actually a book, wow. I don’t think I’m going to read it because I’m too attached to the film. Plus, what’s great about the movie is that there is no story. It’s all about the image, the sound, the feel. It’s also such a perfect 1990s movie.

I want to watch more movies, but nobody makes masterpieces like Crash any longer.

    The book, so far, also seems to be about the image, feel, vibe. Funnily enough I’m feeling the same hesitation in the opposite direction because I’m quite squeamish. I can deal with a written description of this stuff more easily than what I imagine the visual depiction is. I’ve heard the film is great though.

    The great thing about books and films is that nobody could make anything worth reading or watching ever again and we still couldn’t get through all the good stuff in a lifetime. It’s a great escape from the tyranny of recency present everywhere else. There’s still new books I’m interested in reading but I’ve mostly given up on new movies unless someone else wants to watch one with me.

    I endorse Demotrash’s characterization of the novel.

    Clarissa, I don’t know if you would like Ballard, but you should read something of his. Concrete Island might be a good choice, fairly representative of his favourite themes and contradictions. His short fiction is great, even if you’re more partial to novels (as I am myself).

      I’ve particularly heard The Atrocity Exhibition recommended. I’ve just gotten started with Ballard so I have no idea how it is. I do like the cover:
