Curiously, the writer who called me a peasant face is not wrong. I look exactly like my mother who hails from a deep Ukrainian countryside.

The writer is a rude prick but he’s got great powers of observation. I take exception to the idea that there’s anything wrong with peasant faces and I carry mine proudly.

Town vs. country was one of the biggest divides in SA politics. The term Boer literally means farmer but more accurately means country bumpkin.

The apartheid government called Johannesburg airport Jan Smuts airport since he was the candidate for jet setting liberal elites in the big city, not the people down on the farm.

The education they provided allowed most of the Boer best and brightest to go to college and move to the cities until De Klerk, a lawyer from a rich family who decentralised power as much as possible to the cities and retired to Cape Town.

These days white poiltics in SA is 80% concentrated in the cities and the rural vote is negligible.
