This is from Stefan Zweig’s description of the 1890s era in Austria:
This happened to a close friend of my mother’s. The parents told her to go back to the husband, who beat her to a bloody pulp and raped her. Everybody in the story was very highly educated by Soviet standards. This couple lived together until old age, engaging in acts of the most extraordinary daily cruelty towards each other.
It never is as cute in real life as it is in literature.
