I love working. I especially love the kind of work I do on sabbatical. I read, write, then read and write some more. I decided to run an experiment.

On Tuesday, I worked at home. On Wednesday, I worked at the office. The results are as follows:

Tuesday

Total work hours: 4 hours 21 minutes.

Total words written: 189.

Wednesday

Total work hours: 7 hours 3 minutes.

Total words written: 490.

Plus, I did my travel voucher, worked on the syllabus for my new course, and found a bunch of sources for my new article.

I’m one of the most organized, work-crazy, and deeply unsociable people imaginable. And yet, working at home cuts my productivity in half.

People who say that they are more productive working remotely are not being honest with themselves.
