Republicans need to shed JD Vance as soon as possible. Here are his action points for after the defeat:

1) End the war
2) Focus on cost of living/inflation
3) Put America First
4) Change our relationship to Israel

https://x.com/JDVance/status/2118004988433641835?a=H6FW0393Ra8a1hkO2Zo&s=19

Most Americans don’t know what Israel is. The dude is either completely clueless or pretending. The rest is simply hot air. How do you “end” the war? Vance has personally been trying to end it since March, and he failed completely for obvious reasons.

Haven’t we had enough of this silliness of “ending” wars singlehandedly? You can’t end a conflict if one of the sides is opposed to ending it. That’s why the Cold War never ended. Russia’s war against Ukraine continues.

Also, I’m very annoyed with the expression “cost of living.” Why can’t we say “prices”? Say directly that you want to lower prices. Which is impossible. They are never going down. All of this blather about “focusing on the cost of living” will bring no results. Voters will be angry. They’ll punish you during elections. Which is exactly what happened a few hours ago so the memory should be fresh.

This guy is a moron. He just lost an election in the most pathetic way possible and he’s still repeating the same slogans that lost the election.

    Rod Dreher said it right:

“Republicans lost because Trump is extremely unpopular.”

Vance can’t really go and say what everyone already knows.

Why would anyone listen to Rod Dreher? The hair and glasses alone are so pretentious.

I’d go for this. I’d go for it even harder if we could swap the candidates. DeSantis has a fantastic record as an executive.

I would, too. But DeSantis has zero screen appeal. Hegseth at least shows up nice in pictures. I think there’s an unwritten rule that any candidate has to pick a running mate goofier looking than himself.

True. We are missing out on a great candidate because of this silliness but it’s very real.

DeSantis is a good governor but he’s a black hole of charisma. Would lose handily in a general unless Democrats pick a real stinker.

IKR? From what I’ve heard, he has enough personality to attract other competent people and secure their loyalty, and the administrative chops to promote them (doesn’t feel threatened by other people being good at their jobs)– we got a lot of good people in state admin in his wake– but he is the opposite of telegenic. And we live in the age of video. Sigh.

He seems all right too. I’d vote for a ticket that included him.

See reply to Clarissa. I voted for DeSantis twice, and I’m bummed he can’t be governor again. We LOVE the guy, he’s been an amazing administrator.

You yourself said the Iran war was an unforced error. How is JD saying it needs to end different? He’s not going to come out and say Trump made a mistake by starting it. What do you propose doing about this error?

There are mistakes that can’t be undone. Like cutting off one’s hand, for example. Once you cut it off, it’s gone.

Actually, most serious mistakes in life have no take backs.

        You sound like Putin.

Walking away is always an option for the USA. We did it in Vietnam and Afghanistan before. Sucks, but continuing on a mistake is the worst option.

It won’t have an effect. The mullahs are now empowered to keep the Strait of Hormuz hostage. They now have a completely different weight on the world arena. The US walks away, it changes nothing. The gas prices continue to grow.. The fighting in the region continues. What’s the point of walking sway? To achieve what?

Iran wants to control the strait, not close it permanently; they benefit immensely from it.

You may call them mullahs and radical, but they’ve been a fairly rational actor in all this and have played their cards well. They know this war has been a disaster for the USA and are now more determined than ever.

I don’t care what happens in the middle east, I thought Iraq and Afghanistan was enough to show us what a massive waste of everything those wars were. Now we’re doing the same thing with Iran. Ultimately we did in fact walk away from both Iraq and Afghanistan, and sooner or later will need to walk away from Iran completely as well. The sooner we do, the better.

Please answer the question, though. We should walk away to achieve what? What will happen if we walk away that is not happening right now?

We won’t be involved and continue to bleed resources? We can focus on China/Russia. Isn’t that obvious?

Russia, China and Iran are in an alliance. This war is just as good a way of “focusing” on them than any other. As for not expending resources on this, how can this be achieved if Iran shoots down tankers whenever it feels like it? Should we be completely at the mercy of Iran and just… accept it?

No. Focusing on them by helping Ukraine defeat Russia is a much better option because not only will it save Ukrainian lives, but we also know there won’t be a Libya scenario for Ukraine if it wins.

I think saving Iranian lives by overthrowing the regime would be great, too, but that’s a less reliable option. The Libya outcome is a possibility.

The only reason why Russia can lay waste to the second-largest country in Europe for years, murdering hundreds of thousands of civilians of a European country with impunity, is because Russia has nukes. Right? Because Russia already has nukes, nobody can do anything to stop it. Meaning that after a country like that has nukes, it’s too late to discuss how to stop it. Meaning that the best time to discuss how to stop it is before it gets nukes.

I’m the person who made the comment you responded to.

Are you saying that the best way for republicans to win their voters back is pretending the problem doesn’t exist and not addressing it at all?

Speaking of the Iran war, the issue is precisely that nobody is discussing the problem. The war rearranged the geopolitical balance in a way that is very negative for our country. Do you want truth or do you want pretense? There’s no easy solution to this mess. I have no idea what the solution would be. Nobody does. It’s not a trivial situation. It’s really bad shit.

No, the issue is not that no one is discussing the problem. The issue is that closing the strait of Hormuz was something the military and everyone else with working brains knew Iran would do, and Trump completely disregarded that.
