Have you ever loved somebody so much that you’d look at them and feel like your heart is going to stop because of sheer joy?

Have you ever looked at somebody at wondered how it is even possible for such an amazing creature to exist in the world?

Have you ever loved somebody so much that just being around them made you want to be the best person you can possibly be?

Have you ever loved somebody so much that you wanted to abandon your middle-aged gravitas and forget your total lack of artistic skills and start dancing and singing in the middle of the street?

There is nothing better than love, people.

Every line you wrote above can totally be applied in the context of love towards children.
One thing about having kids that was completely surprising to me is the sheer intensity of my love for them. I have loved men very passionately in my days, losing myself in them and all that good stuff, just as you wrote above. But, however intense my feelings of love were/are for any member of the opposite sex, none of it comes even close to how fiercely and completely I love my children.

    🙂 You got me! Yes, I suppose this intensity in one’s love for children is understandable and has its place when the kids are little. Maybe it is some kind of survival mechanism, so we’d protect them from wild animals?
    
    I guess I would be weirded-out if my parents wrote this about me today; actually, the first three points would not be that bad (joy, pride, making them want to be better people) but the last one would be ueber-creepy (plus one of them might throw their back or break a hip) 🙂

No. No. Yes. And, yes. Does that make me a screwed up person? Love is the greatest thing…whether it’s erotic, brotherly (plutonic), or agape (unconditional), love is great. But, because we are all so imperfect, love usually has difficulties that come along with it. It can be the closest thing to heaven or hell, hopefully not at the same time, I think, on this earth.

And this is where it would be helpful for a parent to have some attractive male or female object of affections for when the kids do grow up and start rolling their eyes at every instance of parental affection. 🙂 🙂

It’s always helpful to translate each teenage eye-roll as an expression of love for the teenager’s parents.

I have learned the hard way that there is something better than love: ethics. People seem to think that only selfish people behave unethically, but love can inspire the worst of people too. Love stops people from calling the police when they find out their best friend is a shoplifter. Love inspires people to abandon their spouse and children, in order to run after this amazing new person. Love can breed nepotism. And worst of all, love can people think that it can’t be wrong if it feels so right.

Love is awesome but like everything it needs to be tempered with ethics.
