Are the Sciences Doomed in Canada?

Canada always had very good policies of governmental support for research. However, the assault on learning, knowledge, and research in Canada continues.

Here is what a Canadian scientist has to say about this:

Today, scientists in this country got out and did what has needed to be done for years now: hundreds of them, clad in white lab coats, ventured to Parliament Hill in Ottawa to protest the Harper Regime’s policies on scientific issues–policies which, in sum total, amount to nothing short of an ongoing, insane crusade against the very idea of objectively verifiable facts.

I feel very sad about what is going on in Canada. What a shame!

What was it that possessed the Canadians to vote for Harper? The guy is so dumb that his head must be completely hollow.

    Not so sad at all. Canada and Australia are outperforming most of the world’s advanced economies. Would that the United States government could do as well, especially regarding economic growth and containment of the sovereign debt. Harper’s government, relatively, is excellent. Of course, that may not be saying very much!

      Harper’s government was posting enormous deficits before the recession even struck. If Canada has recently done better than the rest of the world economically, it’s only because (a) our economy is artificial inflated by resource prices (especially oil) and (b) Harper’s predecessors as Prime Minister refused to deregulate the banking sector back in the late 90s. Now he’s using ‘deficit reduction’ (and, once again, I need to stress that there was a massive surplus before he took power) as a pretext for attacking his political enemies.

    The truth of the matter is pretty much every western nation is in hock up to their freaking eyeballs. The truth is they ALL govern pretty much the same. Empower the rich and keep their political position. If not, it is see you later. Are illusion of freedom is still a heartbeat from anarchy. Though I will admit its a better illusion than many of the non western nations.

    Okay, I don’t think it’s a so big issue here. In fact, education and research are provincial matters in Canada’s Constitution, and the federal government violates the Constitution’s spirit in these matters. For sure, CON-SERV-HATERS aren’t interested in science and this sucks, but it’s not a big deal in practice.
