I haven´t watched Russian television for about sixteen years. Here at our hotel in the DR, however, we have the most popular Russian TV channel (Channel 1.) This is the “official” Russian TV channel that absolutely everybody watches. It´s more important to the Russians than the BBC to the British.
So I decided to watch Russian news for the first time in all these years. The Russians always used to have very good newscasts, so N. and I turned on the Russian news.
I have to tell you, people, this newscast told me everything I need to know about Russia today. The newscast (once again, this is the most important source of the news for the Russian people because this channel broadcasts absolutely everywhere in the country*) was completely pathetic. It was tabloid quality and had nothing to do with actual news. The newscast consisted of several outrageous or gossipy stories that captured your attention but had no larger meaning and absolutely no transcendence. A man´s girlfriend stuck a knife into his skull but he survived. A bus turned over. A competition between flower arrangements took place.
There was absolutely nothing related to politics or the general state of affairs in the country. Russia is suffering from horrible inundations right now, people are dying, citizens are forming volunteer groups to help the victims. None of that made the news. The inundations were mentioned but their victims weren´t. It sounded like the inundations were taking place in completely uninhabited areas.
The economy wasn´t mentioned in any form or manner. Nothing of any import whatsoever made the news. This newscast was extremely similar to the ones we used to watch in the Soviet Union. Even the jingle that opens the newscast has been borrowed from the Soviet times.´
To make the similarity with the good ole Soviet times complete, each news segment was accompanied by a little piece on how things are even worse in the US. The segment with the man whose girlfriend put a knife through his skull, was followed by a story about an American man who got stabbed in the head several times. The story on the inundations was followed by an account of how American inundations are always so much worse than the Russian ones. The positive segments, however, didn´t have any references to the US. For instance, the story about the flower competition did not mention that there are also great flower competitions in the US.
Europe, Asia or Africa were not mentioned in any context. The vision of the world you got from this newscast was that, on our planet, there is Russia, a place where things are not great, and there is the US, where things are even worse than that. And beyind that, there is nothing.
* N. and I don´t remember if the channel receives funding from the government. Does anybody know?

Thank goodness for the Internet. You know, Clarissa, I really enjoyed your comments at SPHASH. I was one of the commentators who trolled you. In no way was I intentionally trying to offend, belittle, or insult you. I honestly believed you would find it funny.
I once believed what you believe. Sarah does not read the negative blogs about her. Then I learned Governor Sarah had an aide phone Syrin (a Wasilla based blogger) to demand she ¨Stop blogging now!¨ filed a lawsuit against Gryphen (an Alaska based blogger), changed her hairstyle in response to a Bree Palin post, and read her direct FB responses to anti-palin blog posts.

You should watch some Russian pop-music videos… 🙂 🙂 When we lived in the Midwest, we had a tradition of going to our friends who lived some two hours away, to celebrate New Year. And there we watched Russian television, once a year…
And I am almost sure that channel 1 is state-subsidized.

We watch ORT quite often. Yesterday f.e. there was a relatively good weekly comedy show – “Big Difference” with parodies of pop stars, of “Three Musketeers” (because of some date that I forgot), of Russian version of US “Big Brother” show (“where a group of people live together in a large house, isolated from the outside world. They are continuously watched by television cameras” – there is such in Israel too), etc. However, several jabs at US made me cringe (here I mean: ощущать досаду). Not because of love of US, but because of its’ being so, so forward, obvious propaganda. The same can be seen in New Year concerts, though I love them on the whole and never miss.

“Никогда не читайте советских газет” (Булгаков). В Росії усі змі і ТБ є державними, або підконтрольними близьким до влади фінансовим групам. Дивіться краще Українські новини, наприклад 1+1. В Україні сьогодні лише 1 державний канал УТ-1, який переважно ніхто не дивиться) Усі інші ЗМІ – приватні. Саме тому свобода слова навіть при Януковощу в Україні була в рази вище ніж в Росії .

Ворога потрібно уважно вивчати та розуміти. Ось і дивлюсь цю гидоту, хоч від неї й тхне. А для душі дивлюсь ТСН Тиждень.

Дякую! Тримаємось! Важко щось протиставити російській пропаганді. У неї влито багато грошей. Тож, як завжди, у цій війні, жорсткій російській вертикальній централізації і грошам українці намагаються протистояти за рахунок горизонтальної кооперації і координації. Добровольців на фронті і до волонтерів тилу додалась армія добровольців інформаційної війни http://i-army.org/
Отак і воюємо – вони нафтогрошами, а ми ентузіазмом, і усім світом. Дуже відчувається підтримка усіх діаспор…

Допомогаємо, але хочеться робити ще більше. Всі гроші, що я заробляю цім блогом йдуть родинам Кіборгів. Також намагаюсь розповідати тут у Сполучених Штатах про те, що відбувається в Україні. Тут же майже нічого не знають. Цілодобово в новинах чути: “українські сепаратисти, українські повстанці, громадянська війна.” Начебто там ніяких російських захватників і немає! Путінська пропаганда працює дуже гарно. Це, здається, єдине, що в них там працює.
Я тут в університеті розповідала про події в Україна, так народ був вражений тим, що українці самі, з нічого, створили героїчну армію, яка так мужньо б’ється з страшним ворогом. Я ніколи так не пишалася українцями, як зараз.

Дякую за Ваші зусилля і допомогу! В цьому конфлікті ми як Слон і Моська і в військовому, і в фінансовом, і в ресурсному плані. Ми не переплюнемо російської пропаганди, бо тах брехати, як це роблять на Раша Тудей чи РТР порядна людина просто не може. Тож кожен робить, що може – хтось воює, хтось готується до війни, хтось волонтерствує, хтось пише пости, а хтось живе своїм життям і ні про що не турбується. Соромно, і видається неможливим, але є й такі в Україні, що правда, таких байдужих стало мало. Майдан і війна пробудили людей.
А щодо громадянської війни, це смішно. На фронті з двох сторін масштабні танкові бої! Танкові батальйони (!) під Дебальцево стикались в зустрічних танкових боях. Це десятки танків з обох сторін. Армія бойовиків сьогодні має до 300 танків. З обох сторін працює артилерія для стрільби ядерними (!) боєприпасами. Європі більшість країн не має стільки танків і важкої артилерії як сепаратисти.

Попри все, що мені відомо з історії, я й досі не можу цілком повірити, що Росія і справді настільки скаженіла. Це якесь страхіття, що 140 мільйонів зїхали з глузду та ще й пишаються своїм божевіллям.
Селище на Луганщині, де виросла моя мати та поховані мої дідусь з бабусею, знищено захватниками. А скільки ще таких руйнованих селищ. За що? Навіщо? Що ми їм зробили? Немає відповіді.
Богдане, не зникайте, пишіть, як зможете, бо я турбуюсь зараз за українців.
