OK, people, this is absolutely the best answer I ever got from a student.
Jews were persecuted horribly in mid evil Spain.
How can I even correct this beautiful statement?

Mediæval is of course the correct spelling. It is sad that we have allowed our alphabet to decay so.

I did for a long time… I knew it was one word, but I didn’t know it was spelled that way… I didn’t figure it out until I saw it written down in one of my books…

To a medievalist, this is common as dirt. I even have a mug from a conference with half a dozen (at least) misspellings of “medieval.” I’m so tired of hearing about my period of specialization as evil, even if only partly.
