People should realize that faking obtuseness is not cute at all:

I get why abortion opponents care about abortion. If you think something is murder, it makes sense to oppose it. But why do marriage equality opponents care about it?

For exactly the same reason they go into fits over abortion. These are extremely angry, sexually repressed people who hate others for enjoying the part of human existence that terrifies and disgusts them so much.

And no, they don’t think abortion is murder. Do you know a single one of these freakazoids who is celebrating his or her birthday at the time of conception? Have you heard any anti-choice politician demand 25-to-life for doctors and patients who have participated in abortions? This is just a talking point. Just like the idea that they give a crap about fetuses.

Whatever you might think about it, however you might vote on it, how can so many people be involved in an anti-same sex marriage movement? It’s so weird.

Open a textbook on the history of the US and you will see that there is nothing strange about this hysteria of the anti-sex crowd.

You can’t hope to be a productive political activist if all you can contribute is the impotent “This is too weird.”

Hey Clarissa! Are you a George Carlin fan? I was listening to one of his bits the other day and this one reminded me so much of you.

He was 100% correct then, and even after his death in 2008, he’s still highly relevant. I wish he had lived a couple of more years. Anti-abortion is codeword for anti-woman, especially if you support the death penalty.

My vegetarian friend who says meat is murder, I respond to by saying that he is friends with a murderer, and that he himself was a murderer before he turned vegetarian. Nobody really believe this about meat or abortion.

For the record I’ve known people who think of purely elective abortion (ie no incest, rape or more than usual danger for the mother) as morally wrong without necessarily wanting to legislate that or using terms like ‘murder’ (which it isn’t) though they still may use ‘killing’ (which… it is).

(also for the record I’m very pro-choice).

  – If they realize that their morality is purely their own business and has nothing to do with other people’s lives, then more power to them.

  – According to this logic, drinking alcohol is mass murder. Just imagine how many actual lives could be preserved with the liver you and I selfishly choose to drink away instead of donating it to the dying. Morality that tries to intrude upon people’s bodies is not morality. It is aggression.
  
  I have my own morality which is more strict than that of a medieval monk. I don’t, however, judge others on its basis, realizing that my morality has nothing to do with anybody else.

I agree, it’s just more rhetorical bomb throwing to say “X is murder”. I mean, it just doesn’t sound great in slogans to call something murder and then qualify the hell out of it.

The anti-sex hysteria that you cite as a reason for many anti-choice people being against same-sex marriage is the reason why you don’t hear more people coming out for choice and marriage equality on the grounds that sexual pleasure and love without unnecessary/unwanted pain is a positive good.

  – I think that rhetorical questions should be productive, they should lead somewhere. In this case, the only place the question leads is the denial that the two phenomena are connected. And that is very unproductive for the cause of human rights.

I get your point about birthdays and murder charges, but when I was pro-life, those cognitive dissonances never occurred to me. I was actually concerned about foetuses, I just hadn’t thought it through very well. I mean, I was pro-life for crying out loud, of course I hadn’t, but I think it’s probably best not to generalise.

I don’t really like it when people speculate about their opponents’ motivations rather than just… proving them wrong, but that’s why I was pro-life.

I do not agree with this. I know a number of people who believe abortion is murder. After being confused by this, it occurred to me that it comes from the male supremacist mythos: Life begins, of course, at the one and only point in the reproductive process where a male is involved.

I find this both a sad and a sick viewpoint.
