A student writes in an essay (based on some lying crapola report from Cuba) that Cuban system of education and Cuban medical care are phenomenal and people flock from all over the world to enjoy them. Unlike the student, I’ve been to Cuba and know for a fact that its system of education is non-existent and its medical care is horrifying and cruel.

He found an enormous bunch of idiot American “scholars” to confirm this belief, too.

There is nothing I can do or tell myself to prevent my blood pressure from going up when I see shit like that. And I already have gestational hypertension.

Ignorance is pure bliss. That student would probably try pulling some lame excuse like “you’re just spewing out an unverifiable anecdote with no evidence” or something like that.

It’s from the Michael Moore documentary, Sicko (I think it’s called).

Yes, Americans are very naive. They don’t understand that if you put something under the spotlight — give it cameras and media — the best of service will be forthcoming. Americans are very naive about their narcissism, because they believe that if they want something to be true enough, it becomes true. But then they use their media — their hall of mirrors — to create more illusions for themselves.

    They choose to be blind to power relations, for whatever reason, probably because power relations have such a death-grip over the average Yank that he has to look elsewhere to try to dispel his problems.

    Moore? Probably not. He’s a propagandist, not a documentary maker. His audience definitely is, though. Truly the US of A is the land of those innocent from critical thinking.

Yes, Moore does have inaccuracies here and there in his work. But show me a commentator who is never, ever wrong about anything.
I find it interesting how many of the same people who blast Moore don’t seem to have much to say about the outrageous (and far more significant) lies that are spewed out daily by the U.S. corporate media. The “serious” media is guilty of far greater and more profound lies than Moore (take a bow, Judith Miller and “The New York Times”).
As U.S. forces were invading Iraq in March 2003, Moore slammed Bush for taking America into war for “fictitious reasons” He was slammed for it, even by the “Liberal” Hollywood crowd. And yet, Moore was vindicated. There were no WMDs. In fact, Moore was one of the very, very few commentators from that era who were vindicated in attacking Bush for lying the nation into war.
I will give Moore credit for one thing: he calls attention to many important issues that don’t get the attention they deserve in our sick, broken, corrupt, declining nation.
“Sicko” should get credit for one thing: Moore is correct is calling attention to the horrific mess that is America’s health care system. He is also correct in pointing out that the health care systems of nations like France are far better in virtually every respect. (That this comes as news to the vast majority of Americans is no surprise, given the fact that most people in this nation are hopelessly misinformed about the world). Here in Texas, I’d say that most of the people I know get ALL of their news and views from NeoNazis like Rush Limbaugh and Mark Levin.
Having spent time in France, I know first-hand that Moore is correct in his positive assessment of that nation’s health care system. And Moore is correct to condemn the U.S. health care system. I know first-hand that this system is evil. I’ve seen many people’s lives destroyed by this system (and these were people who HAD insurance).
If there’s anything that angers me more about modern day America than the war crimes we committed in Iraq, it’s our goddawful, evil health care system. I’m not sure if Obamacare will fix this mess. It may well be in such horrific shape that it’s unfixable (much like America itself).
