One word that I really hate is “Islamist.” When there are perfectly good and meaningful words “Islamic” and “Muslim”, this new-fangled concoction seems to carry no meaning other than a dislike of Muslims. I looked up the definition of the word in Wikipedia and it says:

Islamism is a set of ideologies holding that “Islam should guide social and political as well as personal life.”

There are crowds of Christians who hold the same beliefs. One of them was elected to the highest office in this country twice. Yet nobody called him or anybody else “Christianist.”

It really annoys me when people hide behind verbal games when what they really want to say is, “I hate Muslims.”

    I dislike the term ‘Islamist’ too for a different reason (and I loathe the current strain of political Islam wrecking societies and guaranteeing backwardness and stagnation for all who ascribe to it).

    I’m not crazy about political christianity or judaism either.

      – Hear, hear! I’m heavily into the Enlightened approach that firmly separates the religious and the political.

    In the west, having a choice, I will easily take those two over radical Islam. To put them in the same breath as radical Islam is misguided at best.

          Who cares what any of these fanatics want? They are all scary and irrational. There was one who threw bombs on people because something something evil something something his religion. And that one was “Christianist.”

    “Christianist” is in fact a widely used term. It has a wikipedia entry even.

    I used to use “Islamist” to distinguish the peaceful, happy people who just want a religion from the nutjob politicals. Haven’t needed to use it in a while though, and I suppose “Islamic fundamentalist” works just as well.

    Actually, I DO think it would be fair to call Christian Fundamentalists who want a Theocracy in the United States, “Christianists”, and their Effect on the United States is equally Damaging to the Islamists in countries like Egypt. For example, I recently read that a Law was enacted in North Carolina forbidding women from Exposing their Breasts. So, while there are all these Dangers to Public Health and Safety in the United States, Women are likely to be arrested and incarcerated in North Carolina if they reveal too much Cleavage. In a similar vein, there is now a Crackdown on Belly Dancing in Egypt, even though that has long part of the Culture there and is even used by Sufis to achieve Enlightenment. So, whether it is the “Islamists” or the “Christianists”, if a Woman exposes too much Flesh, she will be Locked Up!

      – That’s exactly what I’m saying. These folks are all the same and their severe psychological issues are all the same.

    I think “Islamist” is a useful word, like “Christianist”, “Zionist” and “Hindutva”. “Islamist” does not mean the same as “Islamic” or “Muslim”. These new words refer to the linking of religious affiliation to a political ideology, which sometimes co0ntradicts the teachings of the breligion concerned.
