As a little reminder that idiot politicians exist everywhere, I want to share the story of Teofila Martinez, the mayor of Cadiz, Spain. She declared that there are many shameless mooches among people who are getting social assistance and unemployment benefits. “They come to ask for help, yet they all have Twitter accounts!” Martinez said. “How come they have money to pay for Twitter?”

Well, OK, but electronic devices needed to access these sites are not free, unless one uses the bit of free time available on a computer in a public library. But in spite of this technical point, I still think this is a stupid argument, as you say.

I actually am so popular on Twitter now that I receive presents from some of my followers. But I still need student loans and my disability payment, because I can’t buy food or pay rent with cronuts and Michel Foucault plush dolls (to name two said presents).
