Even in the midst of a budget battle nobody give a crap about the economy. Marx was wrong: money is powerless where ideology comes into play. And when personal ambitions and vanities get involved, every practical consideration fades away.

Oh this is about money alright, but it is a long term game and there are stooges and those watching for an opportunity.

I was wondering if somebody was hoping to profit on a collapse of the global economy and was manipulating these idiots but that seemed far-fetched. Sometimes an idiot is just that, an idiot.

The real manipulation began way back with the ideology of individual success promoted by Reagan and Thatcher. That really mapped reality wrongly for people, so that they thought that by being perky and forceful, they would be in the camp of the winners, leaving the losers in the dust. But really this ideology was a way of creating a society of stooges. And some of them still are, to this day. Be assured that there are real players behind the scenes, watching to see how they can capitalize. These are people who really know how power works, whilst the others are following an ideological script that will lead them to be worse off.
