One place I should not be allowed to visit is a furniture store. I’m become possessed with a consumerist frenzy once I see furniture on offer.
Look at this great makeup table I just found for $198 (the stool is included). It’s been a dream of mine to have one since at the age of 9 I read in a book about pre-revolutionary times that such tables existed. So of course I had to buy it.
In Québec, we call that “la gau-gauche caviar”.

Did you really never see them in Soviet countries? To me they just seem like a normal thing that some people have, not anything terribly exotic or from another time.

The biggest problem we had (and still do) in the FSU countries is space. Normally, people live with their parents, grandparents and adult siblings well past the age of 50 in very small, cramped spaces. Allowing space for a woman to do her own thing is very extravagant. Female spaces are kitchens which are also tiny and cramped.

To me this looks too small to be useful. How is it superior to a nice counter in a bathroom with a big mirror, not a little oval one?

The sink in the bathroom prevents me from getting close enough to the mirror. I have to bend and squint, and that just defeats the entire purpose.

I had one of these in childhood, but I still want one as an adult! I just think I’d go for a different style than pink wood, a heart-shaped mirror, and a fluffy pink organza scarf wrapped around the base. 🙂
