Has PETA been infiltrated by a bunch of folks who want to discredit the organization and make it look like it’s filled with disgusting bigots? Or is it simply filled with disgusting bigots?
This is how PETA honored MLK’s day:
Are they trying to make people hate them, or what? Who in their right mind will support a cause framed in this racist way? And “without even a thought to their feelings”? I’m speechless.
Identity politics hitching a ride on other identity politics whilst sabotaging it. I saw something similar with a Texan who wants to shoot an endangered rhino proclaiming that it is not as bad as it seems because large male rhinos do sometimes attack mother and baby rhinos. So if you want mummies and babies to be free so you can cuddle up to them, you should allow the big, bad hunter to go after the big bad, (but endangered) aggressor.

Remember PETA’s ‘Holocaust on a Plate” ad campaign? This just extends that theme. Don’t waste time trying to figure it out. PETA has no shame and will do anything for attention.

I agree that Peta seems to deliberately alienate people, and possible supporters for that matter, and trying to use MLK for their cause is not going to help them at all. In fact such tactics probably will continue to prevent any real change.
But the question “is the suffering of animals something that should be considered?”, is a common starting point for any level of animal rights thought. If their suffering is irrelevant then it is a non-issue and since Peta if most likely never going to change anything they can safely be ignored.
However if one feels the sufferings of animals is at least worthy of consideration then they are “giving thought to their feelings or needs”. In my mind it is not an all or nothing thing, one doesn’t have to choose between denying animals suffer or never eat any animal product.
I am not trying to be confrontational, but why is considering the suffering of animals bigotry? I think of a bigot as someone who hates others because of the way they are, not because of what they do (or something like that).
Is it the use of Martin Luther King that is the source of bigotry or the reference to slavery? Or a more obvious point I am somehow missing?
FYI: The slavery reference maybe a reference to, The Dreaded Comparison: Human and Animal Slavery, which is a book I have not read but I suspect is known in Peta circles.

Caring about animals is not bigotry. Comparing black people’s plight to that of farm animals is, though. Considering how often “they’re little more than animals” meme has been used against black people, this sort of ad is really, really, really messed up.

Bigotry is, of course, the reference to slavery.
The discussion of “the feelings” of animals, to me, is simple kookiness. I don’t know how anybody can use this phrase seriously. I’d rather steer clear of this topic because I once had a very scary person trolling this blog who would rant about the “feelings of animals” in all threads. I finally had to ban her.

– I’m from Ukraine. When I encounter people who are capable of saying these things, I just go away because they are like aliens to me. I don’t deny their right to exist, but they and I exist on different planets. I have known real privations, I will never understand this.

The Knesset has just approved by 44-17 a bill that would proscribe using the word “Nazi” in contexts other than “for the purpose of learning, documentation, scientific study or historical accounts”. Calling someone a “Nazi” or using Nazi symbols will be punishable by law, with a six-month prison sentence and 100,00 ILS fine. The bill will return to the plenum after deliberation in committee.

You know what the problem is? Today’s politicians want to self-promote, get on TV shows, get Facebook likes and links. So they make these outrageous proposals that are not meant to be put into law. The only point is to make people notice the politician and create hype. We saw this with Ted Cruz in the US, and it’s the same thing with that proposed bill in Russia.
Stupid, useless clowns. But those who vote for them are even worse.
