A group of armed men have stormed and occupied the building of the Crimean parliament and put up the flag of the Russian Federation.

Putin has ordered military maneuvers he is calling “regular practice” at the border between Russia and Ukraine. The war ships of the Baltic fleet are moving in the direction of the Crimea.

The ousted President Yanukovich has come out of hiding and declared that he’s the legitimate president and his administration needs to be defended.

Would it be any different if the good old US of A didnt like the direction Canada was going in?

It would be very different in that Canada is an independent nation, as opposed to an autonomous region under the flag of the US. Crimea, while an autonomous region, is under the flag of Ukraine. So if the US had a beef with Canada, we would be attacking a sovereign nation, something we tend to do even though it is in violation of international law.

Sanda, I’m not sure I see the difference that you’re seeing. Ukraine is an independent nation vis-a-vis Russia, and Crimea is a (semi-)autonomous region within Ukraine. Canada is is an independent nation vis-a-vis the United States. Therefore, any intervention by Russia in any part of Ukraine (whether Crimea or any other part) is still intervention in the internal affairs of another sovereign state.

titfortat, it would be more like if the US didn’t like the new government of Mexico, and therefore invaded Mexico to annex some portion of Mexican territory. (Which — hey! wha’-d’ya-know? — is in fact what we did back in 1845.)

This is pretty bad. Russia really needs to back off. I really don’t trust Putin.

How strong is the Ukrainian military? Would they be able to put up a fight against the Russians? It seems to me like they would at least be stronger and more numerous than the Georgians.

From the article: “Clearly Moscow has no stomach for flat-out invasion of Ukraine”

This morning, military formations of the Russian Federation occupied two of Crimea’s airports.
