A performance of an aria from the opera “Ruslan and Lyudmila” was cancelled in Moscow because it contains the lines, “Dnieper is wide and Kiev is far away.”

As one Russian commenter joked, now it makes sense to outlaw the famous Winnie the Pooh cartoon because the rabbit in the cartoon looks very much like Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yatsenyuk, and the whole scene where Winnie the Pooh (who obviously symbolizes Russia’s Prime Minister Medvedev because of Medvedev’s last name) visits the rabbit and eats all his food is very unpatriotic towards Russia.

Read this comment (bolded part is mine). Does it have a grain of truth too, in your eyes?

Я согласен с Вами, что Россия проходит сейчас трудный период. Я не вижут только в России ненависти в том масштабе, в котором говорите Вы. Я вижу ненависть извне, я вижу политиков, сравнивающих российского президента с Гитлером, а современную Россию – со сталинским Советским Союзом. Подобные натяжки хороши только тогда, когда хочется заставить свой народ ненавидеть. Я не помню сколь-нибудь весомых российских политиков, позволяющих себе подобные высказывания в отношении действующих западных президентов.

И я помню, как вся эта история с ненавистью начиналась. Как постепенно исчезали из эфира московские западные корреспонденты, пережившие еще перестройку и хорошо разбиравшиееся в российский реалиях и любившие Россию, и их заменяли пропагандисты, чьи репортажи вызывали у меня рвотный эффект не хуже былых репортажей тассовских партийных пропагандистов из США. Никогда не думал, что мне это подобное ощущение придется еще раз пережить, но уже с другим знаком. Как российским предприятиям строились препятствия в их инвестициях, вплоть до прямого вмешательства государства и запрета на уже обговоренные сделки с русскими. Как строились под абсолютно надуманным предлогом планы размещения ракет на российских границах.

Если уж вы беретесь судить одну сторону конфликта, то следовало бы, справедливости ради, посмотреть трезво и на другую. Хотя трезвый взгляд не всегда легко дается.

  Bullies and aggressors are always convinced that they are the most peaceful people in the world who get provoked by everybody else. Like this guy who shot 3 people last week, while yelling anti-Semitic slogans and then insisted that he’s a peaceful person who hates violence.

On a different topic: I have read some Russian and English/American authors, but not authors of other cultures. Now I decided to try reading some German classics and wanted to ask for suggestions. Thomas Mann’s Buddenbrooks is quite hard to read despite being realistic fiction (the only one I read for pleasure).

May be, you could post about good books of German and possibly French (read Maupassant) cultures? Personally, I love realistic fiction and would enjoy both old, extremely well known classics (but not known to me) and new novels.
