Yulia Tymoshenko at the presidential debate last week

Only a Ukrainian Jewish woman can look like this at the age of 53 and after being tortured in jail for several years. I’m not a fan of Tymoshenko politically, but I have to admire the resilience.

Of course, Ukraine remained Ukraine, so this election’s front-runner didn’t show up for the debate, leaving his opponent to debate herself.

I think if would be cool if she won because her opponent is not only corrupt (everybody is) but also a man. And between two corrupt leaders, I’d choose a woman because at least having a female president will give us international prestige.

      What is so funny? Countries who are more socially advanced and have somebody OTHER than a rich white man as the leader gain respect (and rightfully so.) The USA gained an immense amount of respect and good will once we finished with Bush and elected Obama.

          Obama is obviously doing phenomenally better than Bush. The economy has improved dramatically since Bush, or haven’t you noticed? Of course, it isn’t hard to be better than that old, corrupt, brainless alkie.

        I know that you were once Canadian, did you see how close we came to breaking up? No, I am not talking about Quebec, I mean the anger in western Canada as none of the political parties defended their values. That is what I fear I am looking at in the USA.

      What’s with the sudden outburst? Have you seen Putin’s butt-ugly Botox-ridden mug? Who’s going to look more respectable as a leader, he or Tymoshenko? Plus, everybody respects a country that’s enlightened enough to elect a female leader.

      “Are you a moron too.” Woah! I never used the word “moron” here. I don’t know too much about Tymoshenko but she actually has done some impressive things. Clarissa knows more of course and I’m sure Tymoshenko is corrupt. But I don’t think she should be brushed off wholesale. She is a true patriot in many ways.

      And yes: in a world dominated by an unrelenting history of white male political leaders, it is refreshing to see a woman/ person of color in charge. The only people that seem to have an issue with that are white men. I do understand: it must be hard to realize that the possession of a penis and a low melanin count no longer grant you the keys to the kingdom.

      And by the way, your avatar hasn’t changed. I am pretty sure we all know that JT is Tit for Tat. If you want to try on a new, more aggressive persona, you need to change your e-mail address too. Just a little tip for you. 😉

    What is this “unraveling” insulting. I understand your embarrassment, you should be embarrassed. If possession of a penis is not a qualification for leadership, then surely possession of a vagina is equally irrelevant. Can you admit that?

    Ukrainian wiki doesn’t mention any Jews either. Even if there was a Jew somewhere, she did her best to hide that, unsurprisingly. Nobody thinks she is Jewish, so I would define her as Ukrainian woman only. (Yes, I know father’s name sounds …, but he was латиш officially)

      Her grandfather was a Jew, a WWII veteran. And yes, it’s very well-known and nobody cares. One of the candidates at this election is Rabinovich, a Jew from Kharkov and, again, nobody is bothered.

      There is a war going on in Ukraine, who’d have any energy to care about Tymoshemko’s grandpa and Rabinovich’s favorite rabbi?
