Ambivalent

Do you know this old joke that the definition of an ambivalent reaction is when you see your mother-in-law fall into an abyss in your new car?

I’m in a somewhat similar situation. On the one hand, I’m happy that the rouble is depreciating for ideological reasons. But on the other hand, I have 200,000 roubles waiting for me in Moscow. And this is the money I wanted to use to go on vacation.

There is no unadulterated joy in life.

  1. Did you suddenly come into 200k rubles or did you have them for a while?

If it’s the latter, haven’t you heard of taking your profits and losses early? You could have shifted the nearly 5000+ USD that used to be into something that would still remain somewhat easy to convert back yet retain most of its value, such as Norwegian kroner.

They don’t call this sort of thing “Gambler’s Ruin” for no reason …

Otherwise, what’s the word for happily wanting to buy cars so my unwelcome relatives can drive themselves into an abyss? 🙂

    1. The roubles go through my mother-in-law . And she coughs them up whenever it strikes her fancy. In the meanwhile, we sit here impotently, watching the amount melt.
