There is a scary number of people in Russia saying that what happened to the French victims of terror attacks this week was “punishment from God.”

Even according to the inflated stats of the Russian Orthodox Church, only 2% of Russians even practice this religion. Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, who has also been saying this shit,  understands Islam like I understand Japanese.

It’s beyond annoying to see the loyal, atheist Communists of yesterday start running around all of a sudden, waving crucifixes and blabbing about God’s punishments.

Freaks.

  1. They don’t care about God. It’s a combination of being glad that some people you vaguel(? I meant “kind of”) hated are dead and of the immediate reflex to present victims as guilty.

    1. I know! This is a profanation of the worst caliber. I detest the showy religiosity of the post-Soviet converts. Detest it. When Putin does the sign of the cross, I feel completely grossed out. The guy worked for the KGB and now he’s a big Christian all of a sudden?

  2. Never underestimate the psychological alliances that can easily erupt between those who share the Abrahamic faiths. Suddenly friends can become enemies and people who seemed relatively stable can become backstabbing freaks. It’s all part of the psychology.

  3. Sorry for the long post, but I could not resist. The character who wrote the following is not very famous. But he managed to produce a nice window into the psyche of a Putinist, mixing together a lot of things, including religion. Translation is mine. First round by online translator, then corrected for obvious mistranslations. Some literary corrections were inevitable, as the piece does not read too well in original Russian either.     The statement recently made by the President of the Republic of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves, that after the tragedy in Paris all the people of Estonia became “the French”, is patently untrue. This was stated by a well-known Estonian civic activist, head of the Association “Russians in Estonia” Yuri Zhuravlev.
    “We are not Charlie and we are not French! We are the New Russia!” Zhuravlev claims in his exclusive comments to the portal “Baltia” . [Translator’s remark: Novorussia, or “New Russia” – is the name of the part of Ukraine controlled by the pro-Russian forces, or, even more precisely, the larger part of Ukraine they wish to control, but don’t.]
    Yuri Zhuravlev:
    Today the world is being fed a picture of some terrorists. But the world is no longer the easily controlled masses the financial elites would like to see, the masses who would accept the tales and provocations. The provocations cynically and brazenly used by the American and Western intelligence services to prevent the unification of Eurasia, to oppose traditions and religion, to oppose us, the people of Eurasia. The people of Russia, of the East, of China, of the Orthodox [Christian – translator] and Muslim worlds.
    Today Western intelligence services are trying to operate in a finer, more sophisticated manner, but it is clear that the provocations still have the same handwriting, the same principles, and all are driven by the interests of the same individuals. Poor Arab guys who probably were killed in advance, and whose bodies will be shown by the lying Western media, could hardly guess what they are getting involved in before their deaths. The photos are blurred, the people can hardly be seen. Three Parisian police patrols allowed the terrorists to leave the scene freely, without cameras, without shooting… The individuals who have barricaded themselves in the print shop unexpectedly acquired a grenade launcher….
    After the shooting, two dead bodies were shown to the audience. But the true killers, the intelligence service workers, with CIA written all over them, certainly remain, as before, seemingly not involved. But they will not be allowed to stay posing as uninvolved. They are betrayed by their handwriting, their style. The benefits to the predators are the same as well. Let’s start from the beginning of this “Paris Charlie Story” :
    September 10, 2014, the anniversary of the terrorist attacks (attributed by various analysts to the intelligence services of the USA). In a special statement President Obama tries to explain the strategy of resisting the Islamic State in the framework of the US interests, more specifically – the strategy of combating and destroying the Islamic State.
    British rapper Abdel Bari severs the head of an American journalist and the Western media blame the devout Muslims and the “Islamic State.” As always, the authenticity of the video is very questionable, and there are many contradictions. No wonder the US intelligence services erase these videos from their sites and even from youtube, which they control as well. Think – if there were an agent of the Estonian Security Police [translator – Estonian counterintelligence] in the Islamic State, who would declare something [inflammatory] or perform inadequate or crazy actions, the West would once again try to scare the entire civilized world – Russia, the Eurasian Union, the BRICS, etc, generally the vast majority of the people of the planet – with the dangers of terrorism. By the way, according to the Estonian Security Police, one Estonian is already with the Islamic State. [Here Zhuravlev is being vague as he does not clearly tell if this one person is an agent of the Estonian intelligence or a true jihadist, so take it as you like.]
    After a lot of squeals about the British murderer, whom Western media have depicted as a representative of the Islamic State, the West engages in a cynical operation executing the staff of the Charlie newspaper. This is similar to what has already happened with two New York’s skyscrapers. Several books, including some in America, show that the real terrorists were the US intelligence services, with attacks ordered by the US leadership.
    In this sequence of events only one thing is obvious: in its last agony and the collapse of the fraudulent schemes involving printing trillions of dollars not backed by anything, deceiving the world, stealing resources from other countries, in the throes of the internal crisis the United States are finally* inciting wars on Russia’s borders. On the borders of the state, the civilization, that offered a peaceful way of development, the multi-polar world that suits the present and the future of the planet, the concept accepted by almost all countries, the nation-states and the unions of the states on the planet. [* translator – here “finally” likely means that the US is doing this as a last-ditch effort before going down].
    The blueprint of inciting war employed by the US and NATO has been used for a long time and is based on colonialist conquest. It was used for over 50 years in wars and in special operations aimed at destroying the humankind. We all remember the invasions of the US and its NATO stooges in El Salvador and Grenada. We all remember the bombing of Yugoslavia, the war in Iraq, unleashed in a particularly brazen, cynical and inhuman manner, under the pretext of Muslims possessing chemical weapons that were never found. We remember the killing of Muammar Gaddafi, who wanted to unite the Arab world, to build a socialist system on the territories of the [Middle] East and to get rid of the dollar and financial bondage imposed on the world by the Western evil.
    Now this liberal-fascist Western evil is approaching the borders of Russia. After placing NATO bases in the Baltic States, the deployment of the missile defense systems, rejecting the Russian program for arms reduction, refusal to sign a nonaggression pact, the US is trying to penetrate further. The next inhumane steps include the war in Ukraine – including the war on the age-old Russian territories of the New Russia, the war against the Russian and Slavic population; as well as the beginning of the war in the East, the war with the traditional religion that is [spiritually] close to us, with our Muslim brothers.
    The blueprint is always the same. With special operations, including the last one in Paris, which is served to us as an initiative of just two to five people, the West is waging and will wage the information war not just against Muslim states, against Islam and [Russian Christian] Orthodoxy, but against traditional religions and traditional world in general, against the united Eurasia. Against us, the people of Eurasia. And we must be prepared to respond to this evil. This is our struggle, this is our war.
    Today we are the Syrians! [Translator’s remark – usually the only “correct” Syrians withing Putinist framework are those who support Assad]
    We are the citizens of Odessa, burned in the Trade Unions Building.
    We are the Palestinian children under the rubble of their homes in Gaza.
    We are the Donetsk residents with Kalashnikovs in our hands.
    We are the Guantanamo detainees being tortured.
    We are the Cubans arrested by the CIA.
    We are the teenagers killed by the US cops.
    We are the seven French policemen who got killed at no fault of their own.
    But we are not “Charlie” and not “French”! We are Donbass! We are New Russia! [another name for the part of “Novorossia” – DONetsk [coal] BASin].

      1. One of the reasons I bothered to translate this long piece was actually for the benefit of those people who may subscribe to one or several isolated items from the list, but should see where this path leads if taken to the logical end.

  5. Some years ago I was watching a tv series based on the novel Peasants (Chłopi) by Reymont and there was a scene were a woman’s house catches on fire.

    Her neighbor’s first reaction? Utter joy. She begins to thank god for avenging her (they had had some minor squabble about something).

    One term for it is ‘bezinteresowne chamstwo’ which doesn’t translate well at all, something like “wishing others harm even when you have nothing to gain from it”.

    That mentality is mostly not that apparent in modern Poland at least in the cities (it can pop up when you least expect it though).

    It seems to be part of official Russian state policy.
