Pruning the Blogroll

Israel was born not least because America was brutally indifferent to Britain’s interests in the Middle East; Israel may die not least because America is brutally indifferent to Israel’s interest in its own survival.

Yes, and the sun came up this morning because the United States made it.

No matter how hard I try to prune total idiots off my blogroll, they keep cropping up. The US is probably to blame.

  1. Ian Welsh often writes things I disagree with, but he made a good point about why basic income is impossible, even if government wants to provide it:

increases in income, especially at the lower end, tend to be simply taken away by those who have what you must have. Everyone will know what the basic income is, and they will know who is surviving on just that, or just that plus a low-wage job. And they will raise prices so that money goes to them.

Basic income which does include either oligopoly busting or regulation (or having the government, oh, just provide broadband and/or housing itself) will help many people, to be sure. But in a not very long time, most of the gains will be eaten by those who have pricing power.

This, by the way, is far from a “socialist” theory. This comes out of bog-standard neo-classical economics. Non-competitive markets tend towards concentration of wealth, and those who have pricing power use it (they act in their own self-interest, precisely as economics says they will.)

    1. It’s not a good point. He is not a mentally healthy person. I can bet he’s on anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medication. And it’s the disease speaking, not him.

The problem with “basic income” is that an enormous group of people will be lumpenized and forever stuck in front of their screens with a bag of chips.

Why not just educate people instead? Show them the world outside the chips and the TV? There is no political will on either side for this. When Obama suggested free community college, he was bashed from the Left because Liberals won’t have anybody to pity and despise if this program were put in place, and that just can’t happen.

    1. This is way too aimed for internal consumption for me to get it. Once the war ends, there will be time to work on the economy. Obviously, in war time it’s hard.
