So who do you think is worse, Scott Walker or Ted Cruz? I see Ted Cruz make the scary lizard – like movements with his head and decide he’s the worst. But then Scott Walker emits some new crazy sounds, and I feel he’s the worst. So I’m torn.

Your original question begs the issue of whether any of them are tolerable. There was an old TV show, “The Addams Family.” The GOP must have hired the casting director to put this crew together. Fiorina is a Romney clone, except not as intelligent; her leadership at HP was at best inept. It’s a sign of her leadership that when the HP Board forced her out in 2005, the stock price jumped up 6.9%.

Christie’s personal mannerisms can be refreshing, but that’s totally superficial. His first act in office was to cut taxes for the rich, which created/aggravated a budget deficit, which he “solved” by taking funds that were supposed to go to pensions. He believes gays have rights to a point, and women don’t. There’s not much to like below the surface.

Absolutely. He believed Putin’s ridiculous story about him being a crypto – Christian at the same time he was a KGB agent. Everybody in the Russian – speaking world was dying with laughter, even people who liked Putin. The story was just so ridiculous.
And Bush just believed it. That’s when Putin knew he could do whatever he wanted and invaded Georgia. And there were no repercussions, none.

I am most scared of a Walker presidency. Some of the clowns– like Jindal or Trump– don’t have a chance. But Walker has a chance. (Which is insane. a Bachelor’s degree should be a minimum requirement for president.) And the prospect of a Walker presidency is terrible. More terrible perhaps than even GW Bush’s presidency. On a side note: I like Hillary Clinton well enough. But I continue to think she can’t win. So I keep looking at the Republican candidates to see if I can even slightly tolerate any of them. And I can’t. They all would have disastrous presidencies. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I think Jeb Bush would be the least bad of the group.

Harry S. Truman had no college degree and was one of our better presidents in the 20th century. Woodrow Wilson had a PhD and was one of the worst not mention most racist presidents of that century. So, no the college requirement to be president besides being unconstitutional doesn’t even square with the empirical record. Wilson with a PhD segregated DC. Truman with no college desegregated the US Army.

The President’s role is commander-in-chief of the US army. For any rank above a sergeant in the US military, you need a Bachelor’s degree. On the basis of that alone, the President should have a Bachelor’s degree………..And I’m not sure that Truman who has dropped the only two nuclear weapons in history is exactly a shining example of restraint and diplomacy.

Also, we’re making a comparison with a time when college degrees were relatively rare. Not having a college degree now is probably equivalent to not passing 5th grade 80 years ago.

Stringer Bell is right. Even the best, most expensive private secondary schools don’t manage to prepare people intellectually for a high-responsibility position. We can’t afford to have a president who doesn’t know geography, history, economics, etc.

Truman was denied an appointment to the US Military Academy due to eyesight, but served in WWI and won battlefield promotions to the rank of captain, eventually retiring as a Colonel. His artillery unit participated in several major battles, firing more than 10,000 rounds, while sustaining no losses.
This demonstrates intelligence and leadership skills, and in some people can be a practical substitute for traditional college. The fact that he was considered for West Point makes the case for above average intelligence.
Rand Paul has no such credentials.
I’m not going to defend Wilson, who basically created more problems than he solved, if he solved anything. PhDs in US government tend to make better advisors than Presidents — with the examples of Reich, Kissinger, Brzezinski and several Federal Reserve leaders coming to mind. Other countries have fared quite well with leaders with doctorates. (I haven’t seen any writings about why PhDs work as chief executives in many countries but not in the US.)

Why do you think Hillary can’t win? She seems like the most probable choice. The Republican field is so fragmented. Bush was supposed to be the favorite but he polls quite weakly.
And I agree that he’s the best of the bunch, even though it pains me to use the word “best” in the context.

I hope I’m wrong about Hillary. She just seems so unpopular. Democrats support her weakly and Republicans loathe her. I also don’t see her being able to turn out the minority vote– which was crucial for both Obama wins. But from a rational perspective, she should win. But from the “who would you have a beer with?”voter? I don’t know if she can win. (And it’s the absolute stupidest reason to vote for someone that I can possible come up with.)

I support Bernie Sanders. Conventional wisdom be damned. He is the best choice. I may even change my registration from Green to Democratic to be able to vote for him in the primary.

Her likability ratings aren’t as good as one would like, but if you compare them to likability ratings of her probable republican opponents, she still crushes. That’s the thing, the election is not a Hillary YES NO contest (she would lose that). It’s Hillary VS Another Even Less Likable Candidate.
It’s not a slam dunk but she’s obviously favored at this point. I wouldn’t vote for her in a primary and I bet a lot of democrat voters feel the same way, but the general election is different, obviously.
She may lose for any number of reasons but ‘likability’ is not it. It’s become more of an internet meme than anything supported by polls or surveys.

I agree with Stringer Bell. The Republican field is crowded yet there’s no actual candidate. Bush seemed to be such a candidate but his ratings are so poor. And he keeps making statements that make him sound weak and bumbling.

Remember Scott Walker enjoys his high ratings primarily because he just shuts the fuck up about everything and watches his opponents implode. Not a word from the dude. Decent strategy for now but he’ll have to actually talk come primary time and general election time. The public will then get to see how sharp he is.
