Every single person who wants to use the free Wi-Fi at one of Russia’s 505 McDonald’s eateries will have to provide his or her passport number.
This is, obviously, not a requirement of McDonald’s. This is Russia’s new law: nobody can go online without providing passport identification for every second of online time. This is done in order to combat the only remaining opposition to Putin’s regime, the online dissidence.
I am certain that the Snowden fans over here in the States will not utter a peep about this. But if any of them do, watch how it is twisted to a) defend Putin or b) it’s a lie from Obama and the CIA or c) they’ll shout, “Well, NSA!”

Yes, the law is old. But I feel like people need to be reminded about it often because they tend to forget uncomfortable things.
