Ambrosia

I haven’t had any coffee for years.

OK, for two weeks. But it’s the same thing.

And today I broke down and had some.

This is what paradise tastes like.

  1. I have stopped drinking coffee for six months at a time several times. The severe withdrawal headaches never went away. I have concluded that coffee is a positive addiction. I am down from ten cups a day a few decades ago to two or three cups a day now.

  2. Actually it surprises me that you’re not an owner of a Nespresso, Tassimo, or other similar quick coffee-making machine …

I don’t have a coffee maker where I’m staying, so I have to wander off to Costa, Nero, or preferably Coffee No 1, unless I’m willing to put up with instant coffee.

That said, Little’s instant coffee from Devon is pretty decent.

You might have noticed that British hotel rooms typically come with an electric tea kettle, but you’re typically in for instant coffee if you want to make your own coffee …

    1. I would love one of those expensive machines that make European style coffee but with the global warming bringing ridiculously long and sweltering summers, I can’t sustain a caffeine habit. That’s the sad reality. I’m hearing it’s even hot in Alaska, so there is no place for me to hide. 🙂

  3. I am never giving up coffee. It’s my last remaining vice (I no longer smoke, I used to but these days rarely drink and I avoid sweets because they both make me feel gross and bloated) and I enjoy it tremendously. Like David, I now drink about 3 cups (24 fl oz) through the morning, and in the afternoon I have herbal tea.
    If it’s too hot for coffee for you, there are co My husband bought us this Nestle Dolce Gusto machine https://www.dolce-gusto.us/compare-coffee-machines;
it makes awesome cappucino and other espresso drinks, including cold ones!

      1. what is the point of existence, I ask you???

        Preach it, sister.

What I tell myself is (somewhat unsuccessfully) is that I had eaten and drunk whatever the hell I wanted for 40 years. We had a good run, my body and I.
But the body has taken a beating, and while still in very good working condition, it’s only a matter of time before it starts to seriously break. So if I want to hang around for a few more decades, which I do because I have the kids and because I generally like living, the habits from my 20’s are just not in the cards any more. I am now living in the equivalent of a used car.
        sigh

Think of all the poor souls who grew up with bad cooks, bland foods, and/or healthy habits strictly enforced. Pity them all… We’ll always have our overindulgent youth.

              1. If what they hit is no harder than a sharp glance then yeah, they can bend. Otherwise of course they just kind of shatter (I remember rumors that they were made out of a combination of cardboard and plastic….)

  4. Caffeine laments:

I miss my Bodum french press and my Teavana ice tea maker. They worked well until my relatives dropped the glass parts.
I grind my beans every day and use it in the single cup coffee maker. I use organic creamer and sugar. Still, it is not the same.
There’s a coffee shop near my place that makes gluten free baked goods and has excellent coffee but it’s far too expensive for me to patronize regularly.

I should really just give up caffeine altogether because I don’t drink coffee black.

    1. I grind my beans just before use, also. I use organic heavy whipping cream from pasture fed cows. However, sugar completely ruins coffee. I cannot imagine how anyone could put sugar into coffee.

      1. You don’t have a sweet tooth. Or you drink exceptionally well bodied and balanced coffee.
If the coffee is bad, no amount of sugar or cream will make it taste better.
