I think they have now really gone insane. Why would anybody want to destroy dentistry??
The import of hearing aids and the equipment needed for eye surgery will be banned, as well.
There’s somebody who keeps leaving comments on the blog telling me that the Russians are trying to resist the pressure of the West. Pressure to do what, if I may ask? To allow deaf people to access hearing devices and people with a tooth – ache to get treated? Yes, those nasty Western evildoers. How dare they.

The Putin regime seems an awful lot like a cult. With that in mind, I can think of a couple reasons without trying:
the parade of humiliations (ie rubbing their noses in it) – making people with collective trauma cheer the destruction of food is similar (if not as horrible as) making starving people write poems about the fruits of socialist plenty, the result is the same, people realize they are being made to spout nonsense and support lies and are helpless to prevent it (unless they are willing to pay a very high cost)
making the people a party to the regime’s crimes – at some point in cult indoctrination the new member is exposed to any nefarious activities the cult has going on, to call those out would also mean taking responsibility for them so the new members keep quiet and start chanting more loudly

Usually countries take actions like that in order to protect domestic manufacturers. Does Putin have a friend who makes dental gear?

That’s precisely the problem: there are no domestic manufacturers. Everything has to be imported. Russian economy is run according to the formula of “sell oil and gas and buy everything.” They are not manufacturing and haven’t tried to for at least 40 years.
