The German Role

There is a lot of deeply annoying stuff in the linked article but the last paragraph is worth quoting:

There is something in this that reminds one of the financial crisis of 2008. Like a too-big-to-fail bank, Merkel has made a bet that will allow her to pocket the credit if she succeeds and spread the baleful consequences to others if she fails. It appears now that she is going to fail. Her defenders exult that she is showing a different face of Germany than the one the world knows from the last century of its history. It is premature to say so. Merkel is showing the face of a Germany that is acting unilaterally, claiming superior moral authority, and answering those who object by saying they’ll thank her for this someday. As such, she is dragging the whole European continent towards unrest. No German role is older.

If you are planning to read the whole thing, remember that I warned you: it has tons of very aggravating stuff.

  1. I think that this article is simply over-reading history. It makes repeated references to Germany’s Nazi past, as if that dark 12-year slice of time almost a century ago is fated to drive German behavior forever.

Merkel made a stupid mistake in 2015, naively opening the floodgates of Europe to a vast refuge/immigrant crisis that has spiraled out of control, and now she’s trying to recover from her error by backtracking and setting rules that she believes are in the best interest of her country — and as the de facto strongest power in the EU, Germany’s decisions obviously affect other European countries as well.

There’s nothing specifically “Germanic” about that behavior. It’s what powerful nations always do.

            1. Well, here’s some true good news about getting older. 🙂

The older you are, the less colds you catch, because over a lifetime you gradually develop an immunity to some of the more common cold viruses.

  2. In more sobering news things could get very, very bad in Sweden very quickly. They’re running out of resources and money to take care of arrivals and the number arriving is not slowing down (despite predictions to the contrary).

Most interesting data point: In 2010 theprime minister was displeased that Swedish voters had given a place in parliament to the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats and so he “punished” them (his words) by opening up mass immigration the fruits of which are beginning to ripen.

Apparently there is no a prepper movement in Sweden among those who fear the government could simply stop working.

    1. cliff, I recently read about Sweden:

Sweden: Israel’s most fervent European opponent
The Swedish government has yet to condemn a single terror attack against Israelis, while media coverage in the country is biased against Israel, as are the Swedish church’s activities.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry has recently declared Sweden to be the most anti-Israeli European country. Another evidence supporting this designation came on Monday, when Scandinavian Airlines, the national airline of Sweden, Denmark, and Norway (the Scandinavian countries), announced that it will no longer be flying to Israel due to lackluster profits and “the political instability in the region”.

Israel’s Ambassador to Sweden, Isaac Bachman, harshly criticized the Swedish government’s double standards, which condemns terror attacks in Europe but ignores them in Israel.

Officials in Israel believe that the Swedish silence is due to political motives: The Swedes covet a seat on the UN Security Council, and that means they cannot anger Arab nations by condemning Palestinian terrorism.

    2. What I don’t understand is why everybody is so surprised. What did people expect? That immigrants who don’t even speak Swedish (a very complicated language, by the way) would all find well-paying jobs and not need welfare? This is a form of collective insanity.

One thing I’m happy about is that nobody tried to “welcome” my people in this way. I would suffer on a profound level if I saw Ukrainians in this situation of adopted puppies. I mean, I feel bad for everybody but whatever happens to Ukrainians touches me more.

Have I mentioned lately how much I detest the smartphonization of the internet?

    1. Thank you for the link! The scientists are right, this is absolutely a return to Soviet practices. The best thing about the policy is that, just like back in the USSR, it can be used to prevent people from emigrating.
