And now for some positive news from Israel:
A hummus bar in Israel is attempting to do its bit for peace in the area by offering a discount to Arabs and Jews who break bread together there.
The restaurant, called Hummus Bar, which is near the coastal city of Netanya, is offering a 50 per cent off deal for customers of different faiths who sit together to enjoy the chickpea-based meal.
This does sound kind of sad but at least it’s a step in the right direction. At least, while people eat, they have fewer opportunities to mention Hitler & Co.
Do you get a bigger discount if you bring your own knife?

That’s a very distasteful joke and, probably for that very reason, it’s very funny. I’m simultaneously laughing and feeling guilty.

Haha, next you’ll tell us you tried to break bread in this manner, but you couldn’t get the bread to break properly so you asked for larger, heavier, more concussion-producing loaves …

This is great. In that spirit I would like to commit to breaking bread with someone from the blog whose political views couldn’t be more different than mine. There are a few, but I nominate Dreidel.
Man, if you’re in the area (southern california), let’s have a beer together.

Wow, that’s nice! I thought it would be fun one day to have you and reader el over at my house. 🙂

Haha, let’s not get carried away, shall we? I seriously doubt I could spend any time with a person who has such callous disregard for human life.

Well, I’ll be happy to spend time with you — and I’ll definitely bring my own knife (or being a retired physician, maybe a scalpel).

Hope you haven’t forgotten your Hippocratic oath!

Well, the original oath has some “problematic” — I hate that ridiculous New Age adjective, but it applies here — parts to it, like forbidding physician-assisted suicide and the provision of abortion services. But that oath is to bunch of Ancient Greek gods, anyway…
Actually, veterinarians take a better oath than physicians do. (This is true — if you don’t believe me, Google it.)

Actually, I think you and I would get along just fine.

Sure, it would be fun to get together someday for a beer (or wine or whatever), if circumstances ever bring us physically close together.
Maybe we’ll be among the handful of survivors huddled together on the last inhabitable strip of earth after the final extinction comes. I’ll bring the beer. 🙂

I found this comparison between America and Israel interesting:
The pornography of terror on Israeli media
Op-ed: The electronic media play a huge part in spreading the anxiety virus among millions of people, and that is the exact purpose of terror. It’s time for the Israeli media to adopt American rules.
…
It’s hard to control the Web, but the Israeli citizen mostly uses the traditional electronic media, television and radio, in order to receive immediate updates on the situation. And in every attack he is overcome by panic: Live broadcasts, special programs, fiery reports from the area – without any editing, selection or control. Confused reporters, shouting citizens, and a lot of commotion.
…
Some 3,000 people died in the World Trade Center attack, but not a single drop of blood, not a single body, anxiety or panic were seen on the American media. It’s easy to assume what would have happened if the Israeli media had covered the event from the ground.
….
It’s not a media issue, it’s a strategic issue, as terror without the trail of anxiety is seeks to achieve will fade away on its own. It will find it difficult to achieve its goals, and will be extinguished. The biggest addict of the pornography of terror is terror itself.

However, I disagree with the article’s claim that terror will “fade away on its own” with a different kind of reporting. The writer is very Right wing. (*) Of course, he must believe we can (almost completely?) stop terror without Palestinians ever getting a state.
(*) He wrote this “Op-ed: Those who support a Palestinian state in European parliaments are basically supporting the destruction of the Jewish state.” Btw, he is right in this op-ed in saying that Sweden is the most anti-Israeli state because “the rate of Muslims in the country has already reached about 10%, and is growing by at least 1% every year […] there are countries which are interested in buying the peace within their borders. ” Even if somebody is very Right / Left wing, it doesn’t follow he may not sometimes make a good point.

However, I agree with the largest point of the piece which is that it is very easy for television to colonize minds and do pretty much anything with the viewers. Just look at what happened to the Russians.

This statement isn’t true. You didn’t see jumping bodies hit the sidewalk, but I remember live television images of people running along New York streets in panic after the first tower was hit, and as the buildings finally collapsed.

And actually I do remember seeing people covered in blood in some of the televised reports.

I thought those were good news too. Then read the article and it had sad bits, but interviews with different people were very educational regarding the true situation “on the ground.”
A fragile coexistence at Jerusalem’s Hadassah hospital
Jerusalem’s Hadassah Ein Karem hospital is an island of fragile sanity in an ocean of violence, where Arab and Jewish doctors work shoulder to shoulder to save the lives of both terrorists and victims of terror, regardless of the circumstances.
