Russian Plane Crashed in Sinai

Over 200 people died in the horrible crash of a Russian plane in Egypt. The aircraft has been having engine trouble for weeks but the Russian pool of airplanes is so outdated that there are crashes all the time and nobody is interested in renewing the aircraft pool. By the way, a fighter jet crashed in Russia today because of engine malfunction. This happens all the time with Russian planes.

I only hope that the Russian media will abstain from using the tragic deaths of the passengers to promote the narrative that Russia is, indeed, fighting ISIS and this is some sort of terrorist revenge. It would be intolerable to see the crash used for political purposes.

But ID militants took responsibility for the crash of the Russian airliner in Egypt. Hopefully, we will know the truth sooner or later.

Certainly a horrible thing to happen to anyone and I hope it isn’t used to make any political hay…

In terms of speculation (legitimate this early I think) I’ve seen reports that the plane broke into two pieces which doesn’t sound consistent with engine failure (I’m ignorant about the physics that would be in operation so I could be wrong).

I hope they find out what happened sooner rather than later.

  Airframes that haven’t been properly maintained have been known to fracture and break apart during the stress of flying, so mechanical / structural failure is a real possibility, especially if Clarissa’s description of the state of Russian aircraft is accurate.
  
  Still, Lufthansa and Air France are smart to avoid flying over the war zone, even if they believe that their airliners’ altitude keeps the planes safely above harm’s way.

The plane was an Airbus A321-200 manufactured in 1997 & it is neither old nor out of date” by any stretch of the imagination by industry standards.The Airbus airframe was built in Europe and is leased to Metrojet, Russia by an Irish company. it had been leased & operated by Metrojet since 2012.

The A321-200 is the largest member of the Airbus A320 family, which is currently used by more than 300 operators worldwide.

It was powered by American built engines, built by Pratt & Whitney, USA & are IAE-V2500 engines.

So, it is hardly “Russian aircraft”.

This is not to say there were not technical, mechanical, maintenance issues. But please keep to facts until we know what caused this tragedy. Thank you and kind regards.

  It’s Russian because it belongs to Russia. And it’s old because it’s recently been hit by another vehicle and never really repaired since then. The pilot has been reporting engine trouble for weeks.

That’s now how repair & maintenance of aircraft works Clarissa. They don’t just get serviced in Russia. They may be serviced in international service sites and may even have Irish working on them. They don’t “belong” to The Russian airlines as its like a leased car. The lessor has a vested interest in the aircraft, too.

The only “credible” report to date on the condition of the engines is by the co-pilots widow who claims her husband complained about those AMERICAN engines.

You are right about a previous incident. It was a tail strike 14 years ago in 2001!

It has racked up tens of thousands of hours of flying hours since then.

  I have no idea what point you are trying to make. That I should have titled the post “Irish Plane Crashes in Sinai”?
  
  There has been an enormous number of devastating “accidents” with planes, boats, public transportation in Russia in the last couple of decades. This is a result of extreme corruption, carelessness, and a decaying infrastructure that nobody wants to invest into. Blaming the Irish or the Americans for any of this is quite insane.

As far as I can tell, the only “blame” placed is your original post. I specifically called for waiting unti “facts” are in. That happens after the consortium of Egyptian, Russian, French & American investigators complete their investigation.

Citing factual information on source of airframe, manufacturer, engine & age of craft is not “blame”.

I see that you appear to have an interest in this and, possibly in aircraft in general?
