Idiocy Spreads

Wow, globalization helps spread idiocy extremely fast. Not two days ago, self-righteous American twitterers and facebookers started hectoring people who expressed support for France for not expressing the same support for the victims of the terror attack in Lebanon. [I discussed what I think about these finger-waggers here.]

Today, this same form of didactic and self-satisfied lecturing made its way onto the only remaining somewhat dissident TV channel in Russia. The Russians haven’t caught on to Lebanon yet, so people were chided for caring more about Paris than the victims of the Boko Haram acts of terror in Nigeria. Of course, Russian-speakers tend to be a lot more blunt and honest about this sort of thing, so the response to the Russian finger-waggers was much stronger than anything we ever hear in the West.

I only wish it were as easy to spread intelligent ideas as it is these stupid exercises in moral superiority.

    Everybody is behaving in a not very impressive way. Christie never said he was afraid of orphans. He said there’s nobody to take care of them, and we all know that the welfare system in this country is next to non-existent.
    
    But Christie is also manipulating the story to appeal to his voters. How will a 5 – year-old orphan manage to get over here and apply for refugee status?
    
    Nobody cares for orphans in this situation. All both sides are doing is grab a metaphorical orphan by the legs and swing him at the opponent. I hate this kind of “But think about the kiddies!” spiel when it’s obvious that nobody here is talking about anything other but their own political ambitions. The actual kids are of zero interest to anybody.

      Has it come to the point where republicans can’t even take a gentle ribbing? It’s not like Obama’s laying out some policy position. He turned Christie’s stupid soundbite into the butt of a joke. Happens all the time at fundraisers and less serious events.
      
      I mean, if Obama makes a nationally televised speech from the fucking Rose Garden and says shit like this, then yeah, that would be bad.

Let us also collectively relish the irony of Dan here complaining about Obama making such flippant remarks, while comparing him to Kim Jong il with the dear leader reference. In the same sentence, mind you.

  Ah, let’s can the drama. I have former family members who got into the US as refugees claiming they were persecuted by axe-wielding anti-semites back in Ukraine. Faking papers to prove this lie was extremely easy for them. Obviously, there was no persecution, no axe-wielders, and these people were very financially and otherwise comfortable back in Ukraine. And they were not all that Jewish either, to be honest. Later on, they somehow found a way to bilk governments of 3 different countries for welfare payments.
  
  It’s hard for honest, law-abiding people to emigrate. But for liars and crooks, it’s extremely easy. And it’s the same for welfare in Canada (I don’t know about anywhere else.) A rich crook gets every welfare under the sun while the really needy get nothing.

    Honestly, I thought the mayor was dramatic simply because he wanted to posture by linking everything back to World War II, because that’s the be-all and end-all of historical conflict metaphors apparently. “I’m like Roosevelt/better than Roosevelt because the world is dangerous!”
    
    I don’t know what the process for a Syrian refugee is or how easily the system can be gamed. It was my impression the US is more thorough than the EU. Certainly the process should be looked at because the US is a very attractive juicy target for Syrian terrorists/jihadists/IS members/etc.
