Traveling Circus’s Fresh Performance

Is this the laziest Congress known to humanity, or what? When will this traveling circus finally stop wasting everybody’s time and legislate something that can actually be relevant to voters?

First, there was the insanely boring brouhaha about defunding Planned Parenthood. Now there is a bill about the 20,000 refugees who, by virtue of their tiny number, can make zero impact on the lives of voters. It’s all just so ridiculous, so boring, that I’m about to fall asleep. Any terrorist who wants to get to the US will simply drive over from Canada. We all know this, so why are we making idjits out of ourselves by getting bogged down in a debate about this tiny handful of refugees?

Because terrorists are a scary and exotic sudden danger like shark attacks and swarms of killer bees. Quotidian dangers such as car wrecks, diabetes, and not having enough money to retire in 30 years bore and confuse people.
“We’re going to war! We’re sending fighter planes! This is just like World War II! I’m tough and strong and manly! Yaar! I’m doing something that’s an immediate action!”

I don’t know maybe people obsess over these things because it’s displaced fear and anger over something else. It’s like when some men channel all of their emotions into the fortunes of their favorite sports ball team.

. Any terrorist who wants to get to the US will simply drive over from Canada.
Or overstay some tourist visa.

Well, there IS a difference:

“Car wrecks, diabetes, and [financial woes]” are unavoidable facts of everyday life that people have to live with.

Terrorist attacks like 9/11 and the massacres in Paris — and for that matter, the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor — aren’t.

  I agree completely that all of the whining on the subject of “why does everybody freak out about these attacks when more people die in car crashes” is nothing but a primitive psychological defense. But that doesn’t cancel the fact that this is a very ineffective Congress.

    Well, I’d like to whine about the fact that WordPress periodically labels some of my comments — like the one above — “Anonymous” when I’d like to get the credit (or the blame) for my own words!
    
    But you’re right about Congress. It’s amazing that in worst President in my lifetime is simultaneously opposed by the most ineffective Congress I’ve ever seen. Honestly, the government has rarely been more dysfunctional.

      Yes, people responsible for governing actually refuse to govern. My state’s governor simply refuses to do a single lick of work. All he does is attend endless functions, charitable balls, and outings with his wife. The state, in the meanwhile, continues without a budget.
      
      This is what “less government” looks like, and it is not pretty.

      The bill just passed by the Congress, by an overwhelming majority and which Obama has promised to veto, is essentially worthless.
