Who’s to Blame?

I’m annoyed by this article in The Atlantic that accuses talk show radio, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, Glenn Beck, etc for promoting the kind of rhetoric that made Trump’s rise possible. Anybody can get access to any information they want these days, and if people gravitate towards this kind of stuff, that’s because this is what speaks to them.

I don’t see any poor innocent victims duped by evil talk show radio here. I see people who are getting exactly what they want and have wanted for a long time.

Admittedly I only took a brief look at the article, I usually try to avoid The Atlantic. I think there is an argument to be made that “who is to blame” could be Reagan and the Reagan-era FCC officials who overturned the Fairness Doctrine. Did not see that mentioned in the article but as I said, only scanned it.

We may be people who consume a lot of media and search for new information but not everyone is like us. Some people do not have good reading skills, some people simply do not have the time to keep up with the news in detail, some people are on the other side of the digital divide. When the media was no longer responsible by law for presenting both sides of controversies, those people lost out.

  If the Fairness Doctrine were still in effect, it would put the left’s favorite cable channel — MSNBC — right off the air.
