Peanuts

Turns out women were avoiding peanuts during pregnancy in order to prevent the baby from developing a peanut allergy. Now this practice has been debunked as counterproductive. This is good news because I was eating peanuts by the trainload in pregnancy. It was the only way not to feel hungry on the severe diabetic diet.

One thing that wasn’t easy was finding unsalted peanuts and sunflower seeds. I find it absolutely bizarre that people would drown nuts and seeds in salt.

  1. I think it’s the taste. They don’t want something bland, so they either find them salted or otherwise covered. Toffee or honey-covered peanuts are excellent, but they are often salted, too.

There’s a burger place called Five Guys that uses peanut oil for their fries, and they have crates of whole peanuts out that customers can take whenever they like. The drawback is, of course, that you must then order something–I suppose they’d frown on someone just taking a load of free peanuts and leaving. And you’re not technically supposed to take them out of the restaurant, but a lot of people fill up bags of peanuts and take them anyway. Especially college students living in the dorms, for whom peanuts are a luxury.

Now that I think about it, though, I haven’t seen whole peanuts in a grocery store in several years. They used to sell them in bulk.

      1. They are very good. My family doesn’t usually get burgers there, but we get fries once in a while. They don’t use lactose in their fry oil, which is awesome because the person with a milk allergy can actually eat them. Plus, free whole peanuts. 😀

  2. Though your daughter may not necessarily develop a peanut allergy due to your self-professed consumption of droves of peanuts during pregnancy, she may turn out to have a disdain for peanuts later on. For example, my grandmother ate a lot of honey while she was pregnant, the result of which was all four of children couldn’t stand honey.

Just my 5 cents. I’ve been enjoying your baby posts 🙂
