Suck on this, Russians!
It’s very important to Ukrainians that they won with a song by an artist who represents the Muslim Tatar minority and whose sing commemorated the Soviet genocide of the Tatars. It’s so cool that the win went to the people who really need it.
Let’s celebrate!
At my Eurovision party tonight we were on the edge of our seats! Everyone in the room was backing Ukraine and so worried Australia would win. There may have been chants of ‘suck it, Putin, we love Ukraine’.

The winning song was second in both jury and popular voting (though I haven’t seen popular votes broken down by country).
The Australian song won the jury vote while the Russian song won the popular vote.
But I think the Russian performer (Sergej Lazarev) has said that Crimea is Ukraine, so there’s that.
