Also, on Nordic societies, in addition to the factors mentioned in the link, they along with the Netherlands are generally are classified as “feminine” (terrible name but I didn’t pick it out) in that men and women tend to have similar values regarding things like ambition, security and the work/life balance. (societies where there is tends to be a larger split between mens and womens values are classified as ‘masculine’, in Europe Germany, Hungary and the UK and Italy are all pretty masculine).
One characteristic of feminine societies is that overt ambition is not as socially acceptable and someone making a big deal about wanting to get ahead is regarded as a little ridiculous (similarly, students in feminine societies usually care less about getting high grades as long as they pass).
Overall lower ambition levels tend to mean that both men and women are less interested in reaching the top as long as they generally enjoy their jobs. Some of the other factors like generous maternal leave tend to mean that women actually do reach the top at lower rates.
