Spiral or Circles?

circles

I don’t know how anybody can think this is a spiral if the image very clearly shows circles.

What are you seeing? Circles or a spiral?

  1. If you focus on the blue parts as being foregrounded it looks like concentric circles.
If you focus on the black and white parts are being foregrounded it looks like spirals.
    I saw the spirals first.

  2. I still see spirals after using my mouse to reassure myself that they are indeed circles.

The human senses in most people, most of the time, are highly unreliable.

  3. My eyes see exactly what’s on the page, no more and on less: a still image with concentric circles. The part of my brain that interprets the image sees spirals, because my brain tries to reconcile the complex image with familiar real-world scenes, and the pattern resembles looking down a long round tunnel or standing at the bottom of a spiral staircase…

  4. I see spirals at first blush. The circles are actually quite difficult for me to see. I have to really focus and narrow my eyes in order to realize the spirals are an illusion.

    1. I’m starting to think it’s all in the size of the screen. The first time I saw it was on a huge screen, and I saw circles. But on a small screen, it’s a spiral.

  5. I can see both, and which comes first depends on whether I look at the small middle circles (circles first) or the large outer circles (spiral first). Perhaps the screen size effect Clarissa describes, manifested slightly differently?

  6. If I look at it normally, it looks like a spiral. If I squint and basically look through my eyelashes, it looks like concentric circles. It’s the fanning out of the black and white shapes that make it seem like a spiral (like the blue shape is a single shape originating from the center).
