My attempt to hire a TA failed, as well. She decided that she didn’t want the job, after all. I should be kept as far away from hiring as possible.

If you decide to leave academia you could get George Clooney’s job in Up in the Air (firing people).
You just show up as a person in charge of new hires and before you know it…. half the employees will be gone.
Use this talent wisely.
Maybe you should get on the hiring committees for diversity bureaucrats….
