I Need to Move

Why do I even live in the Midwest? The moment we arrived in New York, I met a group of great Spanish-speaking women and a restaurant that serves all kinds of wurst.

  1. I’m glad to see you that are warming up to New York. I think it’s wonderful there. One of my favorite American cities. That being said, there are some great, cosmopolitan Midwestern cities (most notably Chicago but there are smaller cities like Minneapolis, Madison, and Milwaukee that are also great) but I think they are north of where you live.

I keep asking myself the same thing. The boring but true answer is: of all the places that offered me a faculty job, this one was the best university and had the best public schools.

Sadly, the locals are WASPs. I will never understand the local culture. The social circles are impenetrable. We’d probably be more comfortable in a city where there aren’t so many people who are n-th generation from here and that’s just more diverse.

But the kids love it here, as it’s their home. Even if it’s not mine.
