Finally, the NY TIMES has found the courage to report that Russians are using incendiary bombs on civilians in Syria. This has been known for a long time: it’s not like you can conceal incendiary bombs. There’s ample footage of their use on Syrians.
But the ridiculous hope that Russians will help defeat ISIS required maintaining the pretense that nobody could see the terrifying glow of these bombs dropped on densely populated neighborhoods.
I may have asked before, but…. The Spanish Civil War has been called a dress rehearsal for WWII. Does Syria remind anyone of the Spanish Civil War?
Not to freak anyone out, but it’s been freaking me out for a loooong time now…

I think the chances of a world war in the intermediate future are essentially ZERO. The only two countries capable of fighting a world-war level conflict are the USA and Russia, and Putin isn’t stupid enough to start one.
Putin is simply taking advantage of an incredibly weak, feckless Obama in the remaining months before the U.S. gets a new President. Putin may provoke a local conflict in Ukraine that gives him an excuse to take over the entire eastern part of that county on Obama’s watch, but he’s not going to start a world-war — or even a regional war — with the U.S.

I’m not thinking just of a WW, there are lots of other terrible ways this could just get worse and worse for lots of places.
And no the US cannot fight a WW it can’t even fight beat crappy little militarily weak countries like Iraq and Afghanistan. The US has a lot of shiny weapons toys that it can’t / won’t use (which is probably good), but it’s worse than useless in terms of boots on the ground, especially hostile ground.
I do think Putin might make a move into Ukraine soon, I don’t think he’s given up on the land bridge to Crimea (an expensive white elephant without it he’s probably getting tired of feeding). The Novorossija project is dead, but it’s likely just gonna be a plain Soviet style invasion like Hungary or Czechoslovakia where they don’t even pretend that people want them (though they’ll find a few lickboots to say in public how happy they are).

It looks like Putin will try to get Obama to lift the sanctions while there still is Obama in office to do that. Putin seems to have grown quite obsessed with the sanctions. If the sanctions are lifted or if there is the slightest indication they might be lifted, he’ll start another invasion into Ukraine.
For now, Obama doesn’t seem to budge on the sanctions. But the EU countries are weak and scared of terrorism. If Putin were really smart, he could easily get them to lift the sanctions by promising to take refugees upon himself.
