There is a girl at Klara’s daycare who is terrified of me. She is 13 months old, I believe, and she starts screaming and trying to run away whenever she sees me. I like to stay for a bit after I arrive and help out the teachers because other kids dig me and the teachers seem to like me a lot, too. But now I can’t because I don’t want to traumatize this poor child.

It’s upsetting because I don’t want to see myself as scary to small children.

I’m guessing I remind her of somebody she doesn’t like. A mean neighbor, for instance.

someone scared her possibly, or she saw a dark shadow.

Or she’s transmitting her adult’s anxiety about you. Remember how you said Klara is a barometer of your feelings toward people?

Hah! You are right, that’s something I didn’t think of.

As someone who worked in daycares with small children (though not as small as what you are dealing with), I think it’s best not to avoid the daycare. The more the little girl sees you, the better it will be. Just try to smile at her. Kneel down to her level. Perhaps pull your hair back when you look at her. You want to become familiar. The little girl will feel better soon. 🙂

Its probably nothing really to do with you – she sounds like she’s suffering from stranger anxiety (she’s at about the right age). Hopefully she will get through it soon.
