As usual, American flirtations with Russia mean yet another opening for Russia’s invasions, annexation, and persecutions.

The one hundred and fifth “agreement on Syria” will change absolutely nothing in Syria. But the emboldened Kremlin sees the agreement as a sign that Americans will allow it to do anything it wants in exchange for an illusion that it will help out in Syria. And makes it clear it will now annex Transnistria.

Make no mistake, this isn’t about Obama, Kerry, or anyone else. This is about consumerist mentality that makes people believe anything can be bought. Americans are trying to contract out their problems in Syria, Germans are attempting to outsource their problem with refugees to Turkey. The idea is that poorer countries need to service the needs of rich countries. We want to sell cheap clothes but don’t want to pay our workers well to make them. So you’ll make them cheaply for us because you don’t have a choice.

It doesn’t look like anybody in the first world is ready to comprehend that this approach won’t work in foreign policy.

“Make no mistake, this isn’t about Obama, Kerry, or anyone else.”

Actually, this is about people. Whether this cease fire holds or not — it won’t, because of too many conflicting fighting groups that aren’t under the effective control of either the US or Russia — it’s a major propaganda victory for Putin (because it gives international recognition to Russia’s role in the Middle East) and for Assad (because it officially recognizes him as the legitimate leader of Syria).

Kerry’s a dunce who can at least claim that he has to defer to Obama’s wishes. Putin, as usual, as is running rings around the US President.

  Obama and Kerry are bound hand and foot by the complete lack of support for a more significant engagement in Syria among voters of either party. It’s political suicide to do anything whatsoever but beg and cajole Putin.

    At this very specific point in time, you’r right. Neither party would accept any major change in Middle Eastern policy five months before the next President takes office.
    
    But Obama could have taken Hillary’s advice five years ago after Assad crossed Obama’s own red line, and grounded Syria’s air force by bombing Syria’s runways, and then enforcing a no-fly zone before the Russians ever arrived in the area.
