Does anybody know when it’s ok to start covering a baby with a blanket at night? Klara has moved to a big-girl crib from her bassinet. But she is clearly cold in the big bed. She wears pajamas and socks but it’s not like we want to make her sleep in a winter coat.
Is it too early to cover her with a baby blanket at this age?
Aren’t baby blankets used since firth? Or are all of them too heavy for newborns?

No, you are not allowed to cover them up with anything because they can suffocate if the blanket accidentally covers their nose. Because they don’t know yet how to remove it.

A year to two years? What does your pediatrician say? You could crank the heat in her room higher to make it toastier. There’s something like this sleep sack or footie pyjamas.

I discovered that I had 2 of these sleep sacks. But I had no idea what they were for. People gave them to me but didn’t explain their purpose.
I feel culturally incompetent. 🤗

Definitely sleep sacks! They’re awesome. Even much older kids can’t keep a blanket on them during the night. I think they start being able to do that at about age 4. Otoh, I’m sure my parents somehow tucked me in under blankets from a young age – I’m pretty sure sleep sacks didn’t exist back then 😉

The thing is Klara won’t be able to stay reasonably covered with a blanket through the night until elementary school; they just toss and turn and push the blanket right off with their feet, so even when it’s technically okay to put a blanket on, it won’t stay on. Unless you delight in getting up non-stop to cover her, you need something more kick-proof.
One thing I did and it worked well is to roll the baby into a blanket, like a burrito, with arms out, so the blanket starts at the underarms. Then use 2-3 safety pins in the tummy area to secure the blanket from unrolling.
In the winter, I’d often do a cotton pajama + socks (layer 1), footie pajamas (layer 2), plus rolling up in blanket+safety pins (layer 3). It gets cold here. Costco has nice cotton pajamas and also nice footie pajamas (some are super warm and toasty, others not so much).

Look on YouTube for “swaddling” videos to do what xykademiqz is talking about or sleep sacks. My daughter had a sleep sack brand preference, so you can try different brands too. I found these way easier than swaddling, but it depends on your and Klara’s preferences.

She liked swaddling at first but after she was about 2 months old, she stopped accepting it. But the sleep sacks seems to work. She sleeps like a little starfish in it, all spread out. 😆
