Our exchange students from Germany and France say they wish they hadn’t come here because it turned out that being a student in the US entails a lot of work.
This is why the argument of “but higher ed is free in Europe” is meaningless.
It’s called the same but their higher ed and our higher ed are too different to compare.
How is it a lot of work compared to the university systems in their countries?

Back home, all they need to do is pass the final exam. Nobody cares if they come to class, nobody expects them to speak in every class session, nobody expects active participation every day, nobody expects daily homework, conversation hours, peer learning, labs, presentations, group work, etc.
Their eyes pop out when they see our syllabi. 😆😆😆

Exactly, I would never be a University student in Europe, it’s too much nerve-wracking for me.
(Although continuous learning is not incompatible with free higher ed)

Our exchange TAs from Germany are usually extreme happy here, but I think that is because we’ve got a great faculty member in charge of the exchange on the German side. He always finds serious, ambitious, hard-working types who love the way things work in the US.
I can only speak for Germany, but Americans who rattle on about the free college in Europe have no idea what it’s like. It’s not all bad, but it is VERY different.
