So here is the conclusion to the previous two posts: some people are simply miserable. When a union fails to make them happy, they blame the union. But it’s not the union’s job to peddle happiness. The union makes sure people get a fair contract and holds the employer accountable. That’s all. Everything else people should get on their own.

A few years ago I seem to recall an article going around whose upshot was that some people are just more naturally predisposed to be happy than others (IIRC body chemistry and/or genetics were involved).
I do tend to think that people who look for things (whether a job, a relationship, or consumer goods or whatever) to make them happy will never get there.
To sound all drippy and new agey happiness has to come from within and generally be independent of outside things (their presence or absence can help or hurt one’s spirits for a short time but they’re not the make or break feature).

That’s exactly what I mean. Of course, people should have decent working conditions, that goes without saying. But there are always those who’ll remain unhappy no matter what.
