A fantastic article on academic publishing. If you are thinking of going into academia, look at the list as a test. If the list doesn’t excite and energize you, you won’t be happy in academia.
Read the comments as a kind of test, too. These whiny, pouty, self-pitying folks will be your colleagues. Is your excitement about the list big enough to carry you through the horror of their company?
I thought this article was quite good. I don’t all of it necessarily applies to all jobs. But I did think much of the advice was good.
I was however sort of astounded by one thing he had on there. It was item “5: Write, Don’t Read.” What??? What kind of writing can possibly be produced by an ignoramus who doesn’t read??? Why should anyone else read the work of someone who doesn’t read? Writers should read widely and deeply. Reading is one of the deep joys of the writing process. And if a supposed writer doesn’t like to read? Find another profession: you will only produce superficial naval-gazing work that wastes the reader’s time.

He explained it in the comments. People often tell themselves, “I can’t start writing until I read X. And XX. And XXX. And ABC.” It’s an avoidance mechanism aimed at not writing at all.
Instead, one should just start writing and read as one goes along.
