This reminds me of a passage in “Lest Darkness Fall”, which is set in 7th Century Rome, where one one of characters is talking about ecclesiastic who has two concubines. He says something like “Everybody expects an archbishop to have one concubine. But two of them?”
Must be hard to be a believer these days, probably it’s something like being a Catholic outside of Italy when the Borgia Papacies were in full swing.
